State: Miami-Dade mayoral candidate can’t use ‘El Skipper’ name on ballot
A trapeze artist in a war with the county who is running a symbolic mayoral campaign against Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava was told last week that he can’t have his nickname on the ballot because it “is being used to mislead voters.”
Miguel “El Skipper” Quintero has gone by that name for years, he says. And he may appeal the decision, which he says was arbitrary, violating his due process. Quintero also says the decision indicates bias.

Former Miami-Dade School Board Member Martin Karp, who is running again (who knew?), crashed a candidate forum Wednesday that was hosted by Hayley Ross, who is running in the same district vacated by Lucia Baez-Geller, who is running for Congress, and has been campaigning since the beginning of the year.
Miami City Commission to consider two Watson Island developments
Long-delayed developments on Watson Island are back on the drawing board and two new projects could go before voters on the November ballot. Miami city commissioners will consider on Thursday two new plans for the small isle on the MacArthur Causeway, which connects Miami to Miami Beach.
One of them would change the proposal for an eco-adventure hotel next to Jungle Island, which was approved by voters in 2018 and could be closed for months during the redevelopment. ESJ Capital Partners, which bought the 18-acre theme park for $60 million in 2017, has partnered with developer Terra to build a luxury condominium tower instead.

Miami-Dade candidates for sheriff talk about guns, gun safety at KFHA forum
One of the questions asked at the forum for the Miami-Dade sheriff candidates Monday was whether or not our community would be safer if we each went out and bought a gun, obviously getting the training or whatever needed to use one. And, almost like an echo chamber, the candidates said they believed in the Second Amendment — an expected answer from law enforcement types who own guns themselves.

Fourteen of the 15 candidates for Miami-Dade Sheriff have confirmed attending a forum Monday night on Zoom hosted by the Kendall Federation of Homeowners Associations. They will each get an uninterrupted five minutes to talk before having another five minutes of questions from the board.
There will be no chance to rebut anything anyone says.
