Kendall school teacher challenges Miami-Dade Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez
Miami-Dade Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez, who was appointed by the governor and has never been elected, has a challenger in this November’s election. School teacher Bryan Paz-Hernandez, former president of the West Kendall Dems — now an NPA — filed paperwork Wednesday intending to run.
“I’m tired of the traffic and high cost of housing,” Paz-Hernandez told Political Cortadito. “I’ve lived in Kendall almost all my life — except for when I went to college — and I see the problems go unaddressed.”

Early voting starts Monday for POTUS primary; equipment passes the test

The Miami-Dade County Elections Department has finished testing all the 1,700+ voting units that will be deployed for the March 19 Presidential Preference Primary Election. On Wednesday, they reached a “milestone day,” said Elections Supervisor Christine White, when the county conducted the state-required random Logic and Accuracy Test of 5% of the equipment to be used.
Katherine Fernandez Rundle starts building campaign bank with $420K+
After reporting month after month with no contributions for more than three years, a political action committee for Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle reported raising $182,000 in the last quarter of 2023. Add that to the $239,374 reported in her campaign account and Ms KFR has almost half a million in the bank already.
What she doesn’t have is a race. Nobody has challenged our state attorney. At least not yet. And it would be a hard bid. Fernandez Rundle has proven to be invincible at the polls.
New Coral Gables PAC seeks to change election date and commission powers
A new political action committee in Coral Gables has formed with the intention of getting three charter amendments on the ballot.
According to it’s website, Accountable Coral Gables is promoting a change in the election date to November on even years — which there is already a petition being circulated for — the requirement of voter approval to increase electeds’ salaries in the future and the requirement of a four fifths vote on the commission to dip into the city’s reserve funds.

Someone’s collecting petitions to move Coral Gables election date to November
The debate ended in September, when the new majority on the Coral Gables Commission — Melissa Castro, Ariel Fernandez and Kirk Menendez — voted to keep the Election Day in the City Beautiful in April on odd years rather than move it to the general election on even years.
Commissioners also voted unanimously to create a charter review committee that would consider such changes in a more complete and inclusive way. That committee had an organizational meeting but has yet to tackle any of the issues that will be put before them.
