Damian Pardo beats odds, incumbent Miami Commissioner Sabina Covo
Voters in Miami’s District 2 rejected 9-month Commissioner Sabina Covo, choosing financial advisor and human rights activist Damian Pardo, who was hit with a flurry of negative attacks in the last week by a political action committee funded with dark money.
Interestingly, it may have backfired. Because while Covo won in the mail-in ballots, Pardo got more early votes and Election Day nods, leading to a 53% victory. In the low turnout election, that translates to a difference of 263 votes.

Several mailers and text messages have gone out in Miami this week to try to tie District 2 commission candidate Damian Pardo to Commissioner Joe Carollo, who is that toxic.
The weak connections are the financial consultant and human rights activist, who is in the runoff against incumbent Commissioner Sabina Covo, was Carollo’s appointment to the city’s LGBTQ Advisory Board and that the District 3 commissioner provided funds for Pardo’s Gay8 Festival. But the truth is that Carollo appointed SAVE Executive Director Orlando Gonzales to that committee and that Pardo was the “at large” appointment. And the Gay8 Festival is in Carollo’s District, which means his office would likely provide financial support to anybody, as he does to other events.

The Miami Beach mayor’s runoff is not what most political observers expected to see. Former Commissioner Michael Góngora will face Commissioner Steven Meiner on the Nov. 21 ballot.
Many, including Ladra, expected the runoff to be between the two Mikes — Góngora and former commissioner and former State Rep. Mike Grieco, who really should have run for Senate against Ileana Garcia, who only got elected through the trickery of a fake plantidate. Yes, the MTV Exec got more votes than Grieco did but Bill Roedy spent millions on advertising.

Hialeah could add Trump to street names despite lawsuits and indictments
It’s a done deal. The Hialeah City Council will consider a street naming Tuesday, but it’s all but on the map. That’s because the street that is to be named is to be named for former president Donald Trump, who is defending himself against 91 criminal charges spread across four states and federal indictments.
He is currently standing civil trial in New York in a $250 million fraud lawsuit filed by the attorney general.

Upset in Hialeah council race could spell trouble for Mayor Stevie Bovo
It was a big surprise for many in Hialeah when nurse Angelica Pacheco beat longtime Councilwoman Vivian Casáls-Muñoz with 52% of the vote despite a negative campaign that called her, of all things, a child abuser.
The upset is also seen by some as a referendum on Mayor Esteban “Stevie” Bovo, who heavily backed Casáls-Muñoz, and came under fire lately for battling Councilman Bryan Calvo on public records. Calvo filed a lawsuit against Bovo and the city after he was charged $6,700 for public records about the 911 call center, which he is trying to assess, as it is his job.
