Florida legislative session starts as a Ron DeSantis presidential campaign event
The Ron DeSantis for President campaign is scheduled to convene Tuesday in Tallahassee when the Florida State Legislature begins its 2023 session.
DeSantis has already been campaigning incognito — traveling to fundraisers in Texas and California. He published a book that is subtitled “Florida’s blueprint for America’s revival.” That’s not a hint?
Another Joe Carollo pollo parody hits the web — this time it’s en español
No, it’s not El Gran Combo. But it sounds just like them.
There’s a new parody song and video about the man chicken protesting Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo who was arrested at Maurice Ferre Park at the grand opening of the dog and cat sculptures walk last month. The video was posted this week on YouTube. This one is in Spanish, sung to the tune of Don Goyo, a popular salsa number interpreted by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico in 1971, and a staple at many 80s quinceñeras.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson will be here when she gets her street named
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman on the highest bench, will be coming home this week to South Miami-Dade, where her parents still live, for a street naming ceremony in her honor.
Brown Jackson, who graduated from Palmetto Senior High, class of 1988, will have a portion of Eureka Drive, between Old Cutler Road and Caribbean Boulevard, named after her Monday morning. Commissioners approved the street naming, sponsored by District 8 Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, in October.
Coral Gables Commission candidates provide first glimpse at PTA forum
The six Coral Gables Commission candidates in the upcoming April election answered questions from both adult residents and students Thursday at the first forum of the 2023 election, hosted by the Coral Gables PTA on Zoom.
The next forum is from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, hosted by the Coral Gables Chamber at the UM Newman Alumni Center, 6200 San Amaro Drive.
Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago may have conflict of interest in Little Gables
The Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust has gotten a complaint about Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago and his intense interest in the annexation of Little Gables, where his lobbyist brother represents the largest property owner.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Ladra knows Lago said that nobody in his family had any business interest in the area. But that was a lie. He was very dramatic about it, pulling out an affidavit at a public commission meeting in August and signing it, “under penalty of perjury,” in front of the City Clerk.
Pinecrest referendum would put zoning, land use changes in the hands of voters
Pinecrest voters have the chance to get more control over development in their village through a referendum that would require a public vote for practically all zoning code and land use changes. If it passes next week, any attempt to increase density, height and floor area ratio, or to create new zoning districts — or even change a definition in the zoning code — would have to be approved by 60% of voters.
Pinecrest electeds are livid that they are losing that power.

Sabina Covo beats 12 others to win the special election in Miami’s District 2
After what must be the shortest campaign cycle in the city’s history, Sabina Covo won Miami’s special election in District 2. The TV journalist turned communications pro will fill the vacancy created when Ken Russell resigned to run for Congress (and lost).
Covo, who was endorsed by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and former Sen. Annette Taddeo, got almost 30% of the vote, which is a huge coop in such a clusterbunch election with 13 candidates splitting 6,243 votes. There is no runoff.
