Coral Gables Vince Lago is running slate of candidates in April election
Even though qualifying ends next month, it looks like Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago has got himself a slate for the April election already.
Lago, who is so far facing only a nominal challenge from Jackson “Rip” Holmes, and attorney Alex Bucelo in Group 5, who lost two years ago to Commissioner Kirk Menendez, are having a joint fundraiser at the end of the month. And last week, Ivette Arango-O’Doski, lawyer/lobbyist and interior designer, announced she had Lago’s endorsement in the Group 4 race.

Miami will have a special Feb election to fill Ken Russell vacancy in District 2
It took two days because Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla was hoping to wear two of his colleagues down. But Commissioner Manolo Reyes and Chairwoman Christine King stood fast on their desire for a special election to fill the vacancy in District 2 created by Ken Russell‘s resignation to run for Congress (he lost the primary).
This election will likely take place on Feb. 27, the absolute last day it can, according to the city charter, according to City Clerk Todd Hannon and City Attorney Victoria Mendez. If it could be later, ADLP would have it later.
Campaign for Miami commission appointment includes email to residents
Some residents in Miami started getting emails this week that attempt to pre-empt people from protesting the possible upcoming appointment of a city commissioner to replace Ken Russell, who resigned to run for Congress.
Russell lost in the primary and last week changed his resignation effective date to Dec. 30. That means the commission has to decide how to fill the vacancy within 10 days. So they set a meeting for Saturday, which is the last possible day to decide between an appointment or a special election.

ADLP wishes voters a Happy Holidays in possible first hint of mayoral dreams
Miami City Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla sent out cards last week to wish voters a Happy Holidays.
They were not only sent to District 1 voters, however. They also landed in mailboxes in Districts 2, 3 and 4 — it’s unlikely he would campaign in District 5 — in the first real hint that Diaz de la Portilla is considering a run for mayor in 2025.

Miami’s Joe Carollo feeds thousands to stay in office as recall talk starts again
Anyone who wonders how corrupt Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo keeps getting re-elected just has to look at last week’s food distribution gimmick.
Over three days, Carollo says he distributed 7,000 bags of food to families in District 3 for the holidays. The bags weighed 50 pounds and were valued at $100. Some included a donated pork pernil for the traditional Cuban Noche Buena meal. His staff went to three different parks to distribute the red bags. A lot of elderly voters got them delivered to their homes.
