The city of Doral has a new mayor today after voters on Tuesday chose former Councilwoman and Miami-Dade School Board Member Christi Fraga over Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, 55% to 45%.

There were also two new council members elected on much narrower margins. Both Rafael Pineyro and Maureen Porras beat opponents Susie Castillo and Ivette Gonzalez Petkovich, 51% to 49% and 52% to 48%, respectively. It was a flip for both. Gonzalez left the first round in August with 43% to Porras 38% and Castillo had a 10-point lead over Pinyero.

While a Miami-Dade Commission seat has sat vacant for two months, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wasted no time in naming former Miami Springs Councilman Daniel “Danny” Espino to the county school board Monday to replace Christi Fraga, who resigned to run for mayor of Doral and has a runoff in December.

Doral Councilwoman Digna Cabral was reelected last week with 59% of the vote, but two other council contests and the heated mayoral race head into runoffs after nobody got 50% plus one.

For mayor, Christi Fraga, who has served as a Doral councilwoman and a Miami-Dade School Board member, came out on top of a four-way race with 41% of the vote. Doral Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca, who is endorsed by outgoing Mayor J.C. Bermudez, got 30%.
