What is State Rep. Daniel “Danny” Perez doing getting all involved in the proposed Miami-Dade subsidies for the World Cup? This week, the Miami Herald published a story in which Perez came out against a move to give $46 million away for the privilege of hosting seven World Cup matches in 2026.

Perez, a Republican representing House District 116 (Westchester), says no public funds should go to the “elites of FIFA,” referring to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, which organizes the international tournament every four years, and that the money should go to other needs, of which there are plenty.

The second phase of The Underline, a 10-mile linear park from Brickell to Dadeland along the Metrorail tracks, has been completed and will be unveiled at a special ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday that’s going to be packed with perky politicos posing for pictures to post on their social platforms.

Phase 2 is a 2.14-mile segment that connects SW 13th Street to SW 19th Avenue, with three main hubs to concentrate amenities: the Simpson Park Playground Area, Vizcaya Station Plaza and the 17th Avenue Plaza. Construction began in the Fall of 2021 with three “key drivers” in mind: safe multi-modal transportation, nature, and community, according to the Miami-Dade website. Safe pedestrian and bike paths and access to nature were the two priorities identified by the community during the planning process, which included two public meetings, several presentations and more than one survey.

Some Miami-Dade voters got a text message poll over the weekend, gauging support for many of the big candidates on the ballot this year and also for the $2.5 billion bond referendum promoted by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and dropped on us during her State of the County address in January.

And, for the first time, the bond referendum was tentatively tied to a new proposal to expand MetroRail.
