Lago doesn’t have a real challenge in this April’s city elections — Jackson “Rip” Holmes can’t beat anyone, let alone the Gables Golden Boy — but he’s raising funds like he’s going to have an opponent. January was his best month, with $58,650 raised, bringing his total to $69,200.
He has not endorsed colleague Jorge Fors in the county commission race
The city of Coral Gables is about to honor it’s founder, George Merrick, by naming June 3 Founder’s Day. This item on Tuesday’s commission agenda is for a new yearly designation for a day that will likely be marked in the future by events and exhibits or essay contests.
But, as in other celebrations of the City Beautiful’s father, there’s no plan to include any mention of his segregationist past, a documented fact that caused the University of Miami to remove his name from a parking garage last year.
The historic Coral Gables Country Club is open for business as usual. For now, anyway.
While the contents may have been “seized” Wednesday by a strange middle-of-the-night court order in the midst of a dispute between the city and the operators, there are fundraisers and birthday parties and galas planned through the end of the month. There was a wedding there Saturday with 335 guests.
