The Miami Beach mayor’s runoff is not what most political observers expected to see. Former Commissioner Michael Góngora will face Commissioner Steven Meiner on the Nov. 21 ballot.

Many, including Ladra, expected the runoff to be between the two Mikes — Góngora and former commissioner and former State Rep. Mike Grieco, who really should have run for Senate against Ileana Garcia, who only got elected through the trickery of a fake plantidate. It’s a done deal. The Hialeah City Council will consider a street naming Tuesday, but it’s all but on the map. That’s because the street that is to be named is to be named for former president Donald Trump, who is defending himself against 91 criminal charges spread across four states and federal indictments.

He is currently standing civil trial in New York in a $250 million fraud lawsuit filed by the attorney general.

It was a big surprise for many in Hialeah when nurse Angelica Pacheco beat longtime Councilwoman Vivian Casáls-Muñoz with 52% of the vote despite a negative campaign that called her, of all things, a child abuser.

The upset is also seen by some as a referendum on Mayor Esteban “Stevie” Bovo, who heavily backed Casáls-Muñoz, and came under fire lately for battling Councilman Bryan Calvo on public records. Calvo filed a lawsuit against Bovo and the city after he was charged $6,700 for public records about the 911 call center, which he is trying to assess, as it is his job.
