South Miami mayoral, commission candidates to face off at forum
All of the candidates in the South Miami election have agreed to participate in a forum Wednesday organized by outgoing Commissioner Walter Harris at the American Legion Hall.
Harris is termed out. Both his seat and the mayoral seat are open, since Mayor Sally Philips is not running for re-election.
Alexis Calatayud comes out with ‘sick’ hit ad vs Janelle Perez in FL senate race
For weeks, the two relatively unknown candidates in the state Senate District 38 race have been playing footsies with each other. A barrage of mail pieces from both camps focus on their promises — accessible health care, improved education, environmental protections, jobs and the American Dream, blah, blah, blah.
But this week, voters in the district started seeing another side of Republican Alexis Calatayud, who came out with a negative hit piece against Democrat Janelle Perez. Text messages were linked to a video that has also been aired on local TV, all paid for by the Florida Republican Senatorial Committee.

A controversial proposal floated only on social media to build a huge state-of-the-art stadium in the middle of Tropical Park is not supported by county officials or anybody at the University of Miami.

Developer-friendly BCC gives green light to gut another golf course
The owners of the closed Presidential Estates Golf Course in North Miami Beach got the green light Thursday to build 119 homes on the property after Miami-Dade Commission voted to approve the rezoning despite concerns from staff, residents and the district commissioner, Sally Heyman.
But it was expected. The commission is so developer friendly that Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz actually feels comfortable saying out loud that he’s going to cut critics’ time in half but give more time to an applicant.
Developers propose giant stadium, two hotels and more in Tropical Park
It worked for the Mas brothers in Miami so why not repeat the public land grab somewhere else?
A quiet proposal to build a 60,000-seat stadium in the middle of Tropical Park has hit some opposition in the community. Critics have collected more than 2,300 signatures against the plan which really hasn’t been presented anywhere else except twitter and includes two hotels, underground parking a restaurant and, possibly, a sports medicine complex.

Jorge Fors sues Kevin Marino Cabrera for ‘lies’ in county commission race
DEVELOPING STORY: Coral Gables Commissioner Jorge Fors, who is in a heated runoff for the Miami-Dade Commission seat in District 6, has filed a lawsuit against his opponent, GOP political operative Kevin Marino Cabrera, over what he says are lies and “doctored images” of Fors in a series of mailers.
“I won my current seat in 2019. I know South Florida political campaigns can get ugly, but this is beyond the pale. Enough is enough,” Fors said in a statement. “Cabrera showed us he will do or say anything, even outright lies, to get elected.”
Miami Commissioners to discuss homeless, Virginia Key, Freedom Park
Where will the city of Miami hide its homeless population? That’s something commissioners may discuss at Thursday’s commission meeting.
Last month, Commissioner Joe Carollo first proposed a concentration camp of “tiny homes” on Virginia Key to, basically, bus the homeless to and hide them away from anyone in the city. Such an eyesore!
