Miami-Dade voters painted the town red Tuesday when ballots counted showed that Republican candidates had won all but one local partisan race.

The only exception: Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who handily beat her opponent, Jesus Navarro, with 71% of the vote.

The heated race for an open Florida State senate seat in District 38 has gone from warm to nuclear as both candidates take turns stinging each other and pointing fingers at each other like mosquitas muertas.

For weeks, they campaigned on their own merits. Republican Alexis Calatayud, campaign manager and onetime legislative aide to former State Rep. Vance Aloupis, stressed her experience with the Florida Department of Education for the last two years, including during the pandemic. Democrat Janelle Perez, who once interned for Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, stressed her experience as a mom, cancer survivor and business owner (her family owns Doctors HealthCare Plans) with an intense interest in healthcare access.

Miami-Dade voters will get their first chance to cast an in-person ballot for the Nov. 8 election when early voting starts Monday morning at 28 polling locations throughout the county — including five more than last time.

One change that might cause confusion is that the Coral Gables Library voting location is moved to the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center — but it’s right across the street.

A barrage of mail pieces from both camps focus on their promises — accessible health care, improved education, environmental protections, jobs and the American Dream, blah, blah, blah.

But this week, voters in the district started seeing another side of Republican Alexis Calatayud, who came out with a negative hit piece against Democrat Janelle Perez. One would think that with five open Miami-Dade commission seats this year, due to term limits finally kicking in, we would have better candidates trying to seize the opportunity. But when you really look at it, this batch of wannabes is one of the least promising.

It was amazing — and it sucks — that former Miami Beach Commissioner Micky Steinberg was able to take the District 4 seat without having to convince one voter. There was no debate. No discourse. And that’s not good for democracy. Steinberg doesn’t really have to be accountable to anyone.
