Developing story: After only raising a little more than $20,000 in his first month of campaigning, former Miami-Dade Commissioner Bruno Barreiro has withdrawn from the city of Miami commission race in District 3.

The Miami-Dade mayor’s desired request for proposals on the overhaul of both the Rickenbacker and Venetian causeways — a necessary step after getting an unsolicited proposal — could hit a snag Thursday. A number of commissioners and other stakeholders — including city officials in both Key Biscayne and Miami Beach — have questions and concerns.
The first is why were these city officials taken by surprise? Rickenbacker connects Miami mainland to Key Biscayne and the Venetian connects Miami to Miami Beach. Seems they should be in on the talks from the beginning.
Is this a push to privatize our public beaches?
Florida Rep. Anthony Rodriguez (R-Kendall) wants to replace the termed-out Miami-Dade Commissioner Javier Souto and filed paperwork earlier this month which shows he intends to run for the open seat in 2022.
So far, it’s a two-way race between him and Libertarian cannabis advocate Martha Bueno, who filed in February.
What if there was a virtual campaign forum for an important city election and none of the frontrunners were there? Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Could one of the also-rans take the opportunity to become a star?
We may just be about to find out.
